RELTA Practice for Pilots

Welcome to the RELTA Practice for Pilots. It is recommended that you use the practice RELTA materials on this page after first completing the introductory units in Radiotelephony English Training Course. You have to prepare yourself with such a course which is designed to:

• Give you an introduction to the purpose, structure and content of the RELTA.
• Introduce you to some strategies for successfully completing the RELTA.

Completing the course first will insure that you will be fully prepared for the practice listening and speaking RELTAs on this page. Click on the links to open the various files on this page:

• The Student and Examiner booklets and the Answers for the Practice Listening RELTA (PDF files, print these and use them with the Practice RELTA Applications).
• The Practice RELTA Applications for Listening and Speaking (executable files for Windows – click on the link and then click on ‘Run’ to run each RELTA.)

Practice Listening RELTA

You will need the next materials:

• Listening Candidate Booklet.
• Listening RELTA Application (for Windows).
• Listening RELTA Answer Booklet.
• Listening RELTA Script.

Instructions

1. Open by clicking on the link and print the Practice Listening RELTA Candidate Booklet.
2. Turn to page 2 of the Candidate Booklet and read the Listening test overview.
3. Open the Practice Listening RELTA Application (click on the link and then select ‘Run’). The introduction page will appear. DO NOT CLICK START YET!
4. Turn to page 3 of the Candidate Booklet and read the information about Section 1. You will need to write your answers for Section 1 in the spaces provided.
5. When you are ready to start the test, click the start button at the bottom of the introduction page in Application. Once you have started the test it will continue until the end of the test. YOU CANNOT PAUSE THE TEST!
6. Follow the instructions on the screen for Sections 2 and 3 of the test. Information about each section is displayed in both the Candidate Booklet and on the screen.
7. Press the ‘Esc’ key to close the Practice Listening RELTA Application at the end of the test.
8. Open the Answer Booklet for Listening RELTA file by clicking on the link.
9. Compare your answers from Candidate Booklet with those on the Answer Booklet.
10. Open by clicking on the link and print the Practice Listening RELTA Script and play the test again while reading the script.

Practice Speaking RELTA

You will need the next materials:

• Form 1 Application: with pre-recorded examiner (for Windows).
• Speaking RELTA Examiner Script.
• Form 2 Application: practise test with partner (for Windows).
• Form 3 Application: listen to model RELTA (for Windows).

Instructions

1. Open Form 1 Application of the Practice Speaking RELTA (click on the link and then select ‘Run’). The introduction page will appear. DO NOT CLICK START YET!
2. When you are ready to start the test, click the start button at the bottom of the introduction page.
3. Follow the prompts in the information screen to respond to the pilots and other controllers you hear. In the real Speaking RELTA there is no time limit, but in this Practice RELTA you have approximately 10 seconds to produce your transmission before you hear the pre­recorded examiner response. The next screen will then automatically appear, while in the real Speaking RELTA this is controlled by the examiner.
4. Press the ‘Esc’ key to close the Form 1 Application Practice RELTA Speaking at the end of the test.
5. When you have finished Form 1 Application, prepare to practise Form 2 Application by finding a partner.
6. Open by clicking on the link and print the Practice Speaking RELTA Examiner Script. Choose who will be the examiner and who will be the student. The examiner will need to follow the instructions on the script, and click the ‘Continue’ button to move to the next screen.
7. Open Form 2 Application of the Practice Speaking RELTA (click on the link and then select ‘Run’). The introduction page will appear.
8. When you and your partner are ready to start the test, the examiner can click the start button at the bottom of the introduction page. It is the examiner’s responsibility to move through the test – the pages will not automatically change! In the real RELTA, the examiner will give you plenty of time to speak before moving to the next screen.
9. Press the ‘Esc’ key to close the Form 2 Application Practice Speaking RELTA at the end of the test.
10. When you have finished Form 2 Application, prepare to listen to a model Speaking RELTA.
11. Open Form 3 Application of the Practice Speaking RELTA (click on the link and then select ‘Run’). The introduction page will appear. In Form 3 you hear a model exchange between an examiner and a candidate. Once you have started the test it will continue until the end of the test. YOU CANNOT PAUSE THE TEST!
12. Press the ‘Esc’ key to close the Form 3 Application Practice Speaking RELTA at the end of the test.
